Heliox to fast charge Volvo emission-free electric buses in Luxembourg

Heliox Fast Charge Systems to power Sales-Lentz` new fleet of Volvo full electric buses, as the City of Differdange sees their green policy for sustainable mobility implemented.

Best, The Netherlands, October 27, 2016 – Heliox has received the order to supply and install three Heliox Fast Charge Systems with OppCharge open interface by Sales-Lentz.
End of route stations will be delivered Q2 2017, with one of the systems to be located at Sales Lentz’ depot. Volvo will deliver 4 full electric buses to Sales Lentz.

“With this new efficient technology developed by Volvo, Sales-Lentz promotes the ambition of the City of Differdange to build a sustainable change for the transportation of persons and improve the quality of life for citizens. Change is the parent of progress”, says Wolfgang Schroeder, Managing Director, Sales-Lentz Autocars.
“Engaged for many years, we have implemented an ambitious plan to sustainably envisage our city. Called "Differdangechange", we want to rethink the effectiveness of all our actions, particularly our city public transport "Diffbus" offered for free to all citizens and visitors to Differdange We are proud that our City-bus can be continued in a pioneering system and participate to an exemplarity in Luxembourg, together with its stakeholders, for preserve our living city and our environment”, says Roberto Traversini, Mayor of the city of Differdange.

“Electric bus systems are a cost-efficient solution for cities to reduce the problems of poor air quality and noise. Emission-free, silent buses also open up entirely new possibilities for urban planning”, says Håkan Agnevall, President Volvo Buses.

This project marks for Heliox as global market leader in charge systems within public transport, mining and port equipment the start of cooperation with Volvo bus and operations in Luxembourg.  We are proud to have found these strong partners for this project where our vision of an electric mobility future, is based upon solid quality, high capacity and efficient charging is shared.

The buses will be charged with opportunity charging (fast charging at end stops). To facilitate the introduction of electric bus systems in European cities, Volvo and Heliox together with several other manufacturers of buses and charging infrastructure agreed this spring to an open standard interface between electric buses and chargers. The OppCharge system includes automatic contacting by a pantograph, wireless communication, contacting plates and infrastructure equipment that automatically contacts vehicles with a pantograph. Since the equipment features standardised open architecture, every city is able to make its own individual choice of charging infrastructure supplier. This also means that the same charging stations can be used by electrified buses of many different makes.
